Answer: There are many aspects and methods of answering the question I set myself. I think there are 8 key aspects which tie into seeing myself as an endurance athlete. These have developed over the past 9 months.
Turning into an Endurance athlete
New Zealand 2014
I thought it was probably time to sit down and talk about my adventures which I had in New Zealand. It has taken awhile to catch up with things at work and home. Things are calming down a little with all the mountain biking at the moment as I am entering the tapering stage for the 24-hour race at the end of the month.
With a bit of trepidation, I embarked on a 10 day holiday to Rotorua with my husband in tow joining a group of 6 other very keen mountain bikers. There were 2 or 3 people who I had not met before. I was worried that Tom wouldn't enjoy himself, that I wouldn't be able to get enough riding time in and that we wouldn't get on with the others.
Fatigue and Fibromyalgia and having a rest
Well, it's time to add to my blog. It's been a very busy couple of weeks which is probably why I am feeling more fatigued than normal.
Under my husband's guidance, I decided to have a day off my bike and drive to work. I'm glad I did as it was pouring down and I hate riding to work on wet, slippery roads. My real motive for driving was the intense cramping pain I was suffering in my left knee. Whilst I know that the pain is in my muscles and not in the joints and I am not doing myself any damage from exercising at times it's difficult to persuade my brain that the pain means nothing. Normally I will just carry on but I know I have been working really hard on the bike for the past 3 weeks and it has caught up with me. Since Sunday I have ridden 162km on the mountain bike and 62km on the road bike and it is only Thursday! I've also raced for 22 hrs on the mountain bike at full pelt in the last 3 weeks.
Dreaming and racing - June 12th 2014
Last night in the middle of the night when I woke up as per normal I was pondering whether I could compete in the Paralympics in mountain biking. On googling the relevant information when I should have been asleep I realised that not only was mountain biking, not an actual Paralympic sports Fibro is probably not classed as a disability for the purpose of this! I will just have to keep chipping away and competing with everybody else. Though others may also be suffering from health problems they are not saying anything.
